How Often Should You Varnish Your Wood Floors?

How often you have to varnish your floor will depend on the condition, age and wear and tear of your floor. Generally, a newly varnished floor lasts for 7 to 10 years; and if the hardwood is relatively thick, varnish can be applied to it more frequently. Wood Finish

A finish is the last application which is made to a surface of wood to safeguard it from harm and to boost its allure. Finishes may be penetrative or surface coating (soaking into the fibers, as oils, or forming a protective film that sits on the surface, as varnish, lacquer, or shellac). The finish will vary based on the type of wood, and the product will be used, and the look that is desired.

Surface Preparation

The most important part of the entire varnishing process is surface preparation – a good finish is only as good as the surface on which it is placed. This includes hole filling, defect repairs the wood in progressively finer grits, usually to 180 or 220 grit for varnish. it is critical that the surface be thoroughly scuff and free from wood dust using a vacuum and tack cloth or special dust brush, because any dust left on the surface will spoil the smoothness of the final coat.

Application Techniques

If applied correctly, the proper technique will result in an even layer of application that will not have streaks, runs or trapped air bubbles. The applicator is to be neither overworked nor squeezed or shaken too violently (micro bubbles are introduced) and the varnish should be applied in thin multiple coats.

Exterior varnishes (also known as marine or spar varnishes) have been specially designed to contain ultraviolet (UV) blockers and absorbers. Sunlight is like bleach on wood fibres and breaks down traditional clear finishes, resulting in cracking and peeling. UV protection works similar to sun screen for wood, by absorbing harmful radiation and extending the life of the finish and wood’s natural color.

Sheen Levels

The various sheen levels of varnishes are based on the number of flattening agents added to the formula. The basic levels are:

Gloss: High reflectivity, high (vivid) appearance of grain.

Semi-Gloss: Some reflection, something in between in terms of look and protection.

Satin/Eggshell: Reflects very little, prevents dust and minor scratches very well.

Smooth/Flat: Only slight reflection and natural, bare wood look.

Sealing Wood

It involves covering the porous structure of the wood which is final step.
First coat of varnish may be thinned with either mineral spirits  or water (for water-based) as a sealer coat. It sinks in, secures loose fibers and doens’t soak up oddly when followed by full-strength coats, leading to blotchiness.

Wood restoration is the process of restoring old, degraded or damaged finishes. It can be as simple as gently cleaning and scuff a cloudy finish, or as involved as removing worn out and peeling varnish from a finish with chemical strippers or a heat gun.

Brush Application

The traditional way to apply varnish is with a brush and is suitable for furniture and trim. Use of a high quality natural bristle brush is essential for applying oil-modified varnishes and synthetic nylon/polyester brushes are required for water-based finishes. The method is to gently tip off (run the point of the bristles at a 45-degree angle) the recently applied, wet varnish to pop the bubbles and smooth out brush marks.

Spray Finishing

Spray finishing is the use of compressed air (through HVLP—High Volume Low Pressure systems) to break up the varnish into a fine mist. This technique results in a very smooth and factory-like finish with no brush marks and is very effective for complex shapes, louvers or a large quantity. It demands correct thinning of the varnish, clean operations and a special well-ventilated spray booth.

Drying Time

The drying time can be defined as the period required for a coat to get dry to the touch, sandable or ready for recoat. Water-based varnishes may dry in 1-2 hours while standard oil-modified varnishes may take 12 to 24 hours between coats. The windows are enhanced by exposures to humid environments and colder temperatures. Note: Drying (evaporation of solvent) occurs rapidly, curing (full chemical hardening) takes 7 to 30 days.

The environmental resistance is the ability of a cured varnish to resist the elements, such as freezing temperatures, blistering heat, driving rain and dry and wet conditions. Exterior varnishes have very soft molecular structures that accommodate the movement of wood in the exterior and prevent the film from cracking and letting moisture in and rot the wood from the inside.
